Dive fins come in many colors, shapes and sizes. Choose the right one for you
|
Dive fins play an incredibly important role in your diving experience. As slow as a diver can feel underwater compared to other marine life, an inadequate pair of diving fins can make you even slower, and a cheap one can make you feel VERY uncomfortable. For a pleasurable dive experience, you want to have a pair of swimming fins that are comfortable in deep water as well as compatible with your diving environment.
First and foremost rule in choosing dive fins: If you are even remotely passionate about your diving experience, you want to avoid the recreational Walmart/Kmart variety that can tear after a few uses. If you want to choose a quality pair of scuba diving fins, either visit a local dive shop or an online specialty dive store that specializes in dive equipment gear.
2 specific types of dive fins:
There are two categories of scuba diving fins that a diver has to choose from. The first type are the Adjustable strap fins which are commonly used with dive booties in temperatures that are lower than 70 degrees Farenheit. Because of their use with dive booties, they provide ample foot protection when diving from beach areas. When you are considering purchasing an adjustable strap fin, make sure to look at the following factors.
Be sure to keep a spare strap in your scuba repair kit as straps are easy to break.
Make sure that strapping the fin can be performed easily and quickly.
For more warmer environments, Full footed fins can be more efficient for surface swimming in tropical waters. Full footed diving fins are such that you can slide your feet into them and you can start using them immediately. As a diver, you have to insure that these dive fins fit comfortably. Full footed fins that are too loose can fall off easily, whereas those that are too tight can cause cramps in the middle of the ocean. Not a fun feeling…
The other factor to consider is the size of the dive fins. Size and stiffness can certainly allow you too move with more power underwater. However your legs need to be strong enough to use them. Smaller divers should focus more on maneuverable diving fins that are comfortable and enhance your underwater experience.
