Shopping for dive lights?
Here is what to look for
|
Dive lights for underwater diving can be categorized into two kinds:
There is the normal, every standard halogen or Xenon kind that gives you at best average visability at night and in murky waters. These types usually run between up to $70.00 and give you as much as 4 hours of burn time.
The newest types of dive lights are HID lights which give you up to 3 times the power and efficiency of the standard light. In fact, its brightness has often been compared to the sun itself underwater!
Before we tell you our choices of dive lights, we want to give you some additional guidelines of how dive lights work and what to look for.
1) First of all, there is a direct co-relation between the number of batteries a light occupies, and the brightness of the dive light. It follows that the voltage power of the battery will make the light brighter.
2) Dive lights can have a narrow beam or a scattered one, depending on how you use the reflector of the light. The reflector is similar to the nozzle at the end of the water hose and often used to focus on a particular area.
3) There are also a few additional things to look for when deciding upon a light. If you are examining a light, give it some kudos points if it has one or more of the following features.
a) Small size. If it can fit into your BC, you are better off.
b) Reliable switch. Remember, you are underwater, at night. If this is faulty, you might as climb back into the boat.
c) The batteries of the dive light can be replaced conveniently.
d) You can easily have both a pistol AND a lantern grip. This will give you more flexibility as a diver.
