 Scuba Fins

Scuba fins are an essential part of your underwater experience. If you have ever tried swimming under open water without a pair of scuba diving fins, you will certainly appreciate the importance of fins.

What type of scuba fins should I buy?

Like many other type of scuba diving gear, the type of scuba diving fins that you purchase heavily depends on where you plan to do most of your diving.

Adjustable strap scuba fins:

These types of fins are frequently bought by divers because they can be worn with dive boots(sometimes called booties) which provide insulation from water below 70F and protection from sea urchins and coral rock. Adjustable strap scuba diving fins also have a reputation of high performance as they are designed to channel water better and create more propulsion. The downside to these swimming fins are that they are typically more expensive than full footed fins, and they are less efficient than the full footed scuba diving fins in surface swimming.

Note: When diving with adjustable strap scuba fins, make sure to carry an extra spare strap as the straps with the scuba diving fins can break easily.

Full footed scuba fins:

Although they are great for surface swimming or snorkeling, they cannot be used with dive booties and therefore cannot be used for cold water diving. Plus, since they are not as adjustable, cramping can be more of an issue underwater.

As part of our research, we have found a few swimming fins from both of these categories that have been rated well in dive tests from a variety of different sources.
