SCUBA DIVING KNIVES: If you think a scuba knife is supposed to protect you from sharks, think again

The stark reality is that if a shark close enough to be face to face with you and is considering you as his next entrée, the scuba knife will be of little use at that point.

Dive knives are actually very useful for the following tasks:

a) They are instrumental in disentangling yourself from sea vegetation or fishing lines.

b) A scuba diving knife will help you pry something loose underwater or dig something at the bottom.

c) The scuba diving knives also serve as an important attention getting tool when you tap the scuba knife against the tank.

Having given you the benefits of keeping a dive knife in handy on your dives, here are a few features to look for before purchasing a knife.

a) It should come with a sheath so the scuba diving knife can be attached to the leg, arm or a weight belt.

b) Make sure to buy one that is made of stainless steel because they are more corrosion resistant.

c) It should have a full-sized handle so it is not as easy to drop it. Remember underwater, the grip is slippery to begin with, and you may very well be wearing gloves.

d) Ideally, the length should have something close to a 4 inch blade on a 4 to 5 inch handle. With this medium length, you can mount it on your BC and grip it securely, even with gloves.
