Titanium Regulators
|
The titanium metal is popping in many high end items. Titanium is synonymous with prestige in products ranging from golf clubs, wedding rings, rolex, knives, and of course, dive watches. The titanium metal has even invaded the world of scuba regulators.
In fact, titanium regulators are considered a luxury item in the scuba diving world. First of all, titanium regulators are not vulnerable to saltwater corrosion. It does not require the same level of maintenance that a chrome-plated brass regulator will require.
A second, yet often overlooked benefit of titanium regulators is its relatively light weight. This certainly comes in handy when you have to walk around and carry your luggage. Those of you that like to carry on luggage into the plane will certainly appreciate this feature.
Having mentioned all the benefits of titanium regulators, we should also point out the proper context of these benefits and whether a titanium regulator is worth the extra bucks that you have to shell out.
According to a recent comparison by Scuba Diving magazine, many of these extra benefits that titanium regulators offer can be neutralized if you are hesitant to pay the big bucks for it. For example, with a brass regulator, proper maintenance and regular rinsing in fresh water should protect it from any corrosion. Plus, if you find carrying your brass regulator to be different, you can always check in your luggage at the airport. Finally, although titanium may be stronger "pound for pound", brass regulators are proven to be safe and are not known to fracture and burst open.
In the end, the choice between a titanium and a brass regulator depends on your budget for a regulator, as well as what you are personally willing to tolerate to pay the lower price of a brass regulator.
