How much weight is needed for your next dive
|
One of the more intriguing questions that every new diver asks is how much weight he needs to put on to properly stay down underwater. To determine how much is needed, the following factors need to be taken into account.
The general buoyancy of the diver in question. The more buoyant a person is, the more weight he needs to go underwater.
Will you diving in fresh or saltwater. Greater buoyancy occurs in denser liquids, and salt water is denser than fresh water. Consequently, more weight is needed in salt water than fresh.
They type of tank that you will be using. An aluminum tank is more buoyant and will be need more weights than a steel tank.
Proper weight is key to your diving enjoyment. If you are a new diver, you are better off carrying more weight so you won' t uncontrollably rush up to the surface. However, once you are comfortable in an open water, you will realize that extra weights can be pain to carry around. They can actually interfere with how efficiently you dive.
Finally, it is important to remember that your weight, rather your body fat percentage, is very important in determining your buoyancy. If you haven't dived in six months and you have had a few extra twinkies in the interim, don't be surprised if you end up using more weights for your dive.
